Wonnarua Traditional Owners defeat Glendell continuation project

The Wonnarua peoples connection to the Ravensworth homestead and surrounding estate has defeated Glencore’s proposed mine expansion.

The area holds important significance to Traditional Owners as the site of several massacres of First Nations peoples since the 1820s, being described as “hallowed ground”.

The NSW Independent Planning Commission has rejected the Glendell continuation project and subsequent moving of the homestead due to the impact on First Nations cultural heritage.

West Australia left to foot the bill for fossil fuels

West Australian energy prices are rising and everyday people are paying the price. 

Fossil fuel companies are making windfall profits but instead of taxing them appropriately, governments are giving them handouts to export our resources.

Research shows that when adjusted for inflation. Fossil fuel exporters are paying less Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) than they were 15 years ago.

Labor talks up hydrogen

The Australian Government will partner with the Northern Territory Government to build a jetty to facilitate the transport of goods and services in and out of the Middle Arm precinct. 

Yesterday on ABC’s Insiders, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, announced the Middle Arm project will not be used as defence infrastructure and will not receive any additional Federal funding.

Miner's have the right to a safe workplace

St Ives gold mine has suspended activity following the tragic death of an underground mining contractor yesterday. A second contractor has since been released with minor injuries.

Gold Fields, who own the mine, have said they won’t resume operations until an independent investigation by WA mining regulators is complete.

In a landmark hearing, Federal Court Justice Mordecai Bromberg, has ruled Santos failed to consult with Traditional Owners over its Barossa gas project. 

As a result Santos’ approval for the project from the offshore regulator, NOPSEMA, has been ruled invalid and it must stop drilling in the region.

Destructive ‘Burrup Hub’ finally under investigation

Save Our Songlines, a grassroots campaign led by Murujuga Traditional Custodians, remains vigilant in its fight to protect their sacred rock art and song lines from the ‘Burrup Hub’, which includes Woodside’s Scarborough gas project and Perdaman’s urea plant.

Federal Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek, has bowed to pressure from the campaign and granted a full assessment of the impact of all industry in the Burrup Peninsula on cultural heritage, under Section 10 of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act (ATSIHPA).

Gomeroi Nation's fight for survival

In a legal first, the Gomeroi Nation is using the public interest test, commonly used by fossil fuel companies to fight native title cases, to prevent Santos’ planned gas project in the Pilliga Forest.

Chevron favours Asian markets over everyday Australians

California-based energy company, Chevron, wants Western Australia to be excluded from the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism, so as to reassure its customers in Asia and protect its windfall profits. 

A significant portion of natural gas produced by Chevron comes from their Gorgon, Wheatstone and the North West Shelf projects in Western Australia.
