Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today reacted with dismay at the appointment of anti-wind, anti-renewables Angus Taylor as the new Energy Minister. Labor and Liberal Government block expanding community vote on nuclear waste

Labor and the Liberal Government have teamed up to block a Greens motion seeking to extend the community vote on a nuclear waste dump being built in outback South Australia.

“The Liberal Government has botched its so-called consultation and community vote plans in a desperate attempt to get a run on the board. Ignoring the views of Traditional Owners in both the Barngarla and Adnyamathanha communities will be at the Government’s peril,” Greens nuclear spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Coal crew has Turnbull by the throat: Greens

The coal-huggers have Malcolm Turnbull by the throat and the government has dumped any pretence of climate action, Australian Greens Co-Deputy Leader and climate & energy spokesperson, Adam Bandt MP, said today. And while the government is moving on price caps, it has stopped well short of the re-regulation that is needed and which the Greens called for 12 months ago.

Turnbull caves in on climate: Greens

Greens Co-Deputy Leader and climate & energy spokesperson, Adam Bandt, said Malcolm Turnbull’s latest energy backflip to appease the Coalition coal-huggers puts Paris climate goals out of reach. Mr Bandt also said that the proposed new energy price measures look weak and designed to lock out renewables, when what is needed to bring bills down is the full re-regulation of electricity prices and more renewable energy.

“Malcolm Turnbull has just put coal before climate and profit before Paris,” said Mr Bandt.

Greens stand with communities in opposition to nuke waste dump

The Australian Greens are calling on the Liberal Government to abandon its plans to build a nuclear waste dump in outback South Australia, in their dissenting report into the selection process for a nuclear waste dump Senate Inquiry tabled in Parliament.

“This inquiry has found that the Government has completely disrespected local communities in the Flinders Ranges and Kimba, failed to gain consent of traditional owners, and has no mandate to build a nuclear waste dump in South Australia,” Greens nuclear spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

Bandt’s message to Labor: Don’t betray renewables by supporting NEG.

Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today called on state Premiers to reject the NEG deal at tomorrow’s COAG meeting, which now includes a slush fund for coal. Mr Bandt said that if states roll over and support the NEG, they’ll be betraying renewable energy.

“A NEG deal that includes a bag of cash for coal spells death for renewables,” said Mr Bandt.

“The NEG obliterates investment in renewable energy, so a NEG with a coal fund attached will be even worse.
